Social Networking: Calling All Control Freaks!

March 4, 2011

I’ll admit it. I’m a control freak. I like to have the last word and the first look. I bet most of you do too. Social media nurtures the control freak in all of us. “Accept Friend?” Facebook asks innocently.

“Mickey Mouse has just added you as a friend on Twitter!” You can now choose whether or not you want to read Tweets about Mickey’s ongoing relationship with Minnie.

Social networks beckon with long-ago faces and possible new connections. The beauty (or downfall) is that only you have the power to say “no,” “yes,” or “maybe.”

Recently, I decided to try an experiment. I got rid of all my Facebook restrictions and profile settings. Today, my 70+ year old aunt told me to “Eat Meat!” I would have missed this quirky comment had I kept my previous settings.

Letting people see what you’re really made of isn’t a bad idea. On the one hand, you’re bound to turn some people away. On the other hand, many will appreciate your honesty.

Happening elsewhere in the world, Matador Network recently posted a list of “20 Obsolete English Words that Should Make a Comeback.” I fully intend to use some of these words today. My personal favorite is: freck (“to move swiftly or nimbly”). What’s yours?

Oh, Montreal, You Strangely Superb City (today’s job posts):

http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/csr/2245589365.html (good looking people needed to promote a casse-croute. Somehow, the two just don’t seem to gel).

http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/tfr/2227964990.html (I love the description of this film: “Indie Campy Horror Film”).

http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/tfr/2225760286.html (“some nudity” involved).

  1. Haha! I can completely identify! I didn’t even have a Facebook wall for years and decided to go all out as of a few weeks ago.

Thanks for that Matador Network link! I’m committing to using “scriptitation” in my writing this month. =)

P.S. Thanks for stopping by my blog! I’m heading to Chile for a couple weeks, but I’ve subscribed to yours and can’t wait to be in more regular touch when I get back! =)

I hate when people reverse proselytize about vegetarianism. I think its because deep down, they know its the right thing to do–and the fact that you are doing it reminds them that they are not.

At least that’s how I feel, as a meat eater.

  4. Right off the cuff, Harriette!

I just discovered you today and I like you already. Then again, I’m really easy to please. :)

I’m definitely amenable to resurrecting a few obsolete English words. I’ve had a love affair with words since the fist grade!

So I’m planning on using “brabble” and then heading out for a “Brannigan”. :)

I’m feeling slighted at the moment …

Mickey Mouse has not sent me a Facebook friend request.

    Write On!

Hi Melanie! Thank you for your kind words!

I’m guessing that Mickey is too busy to spend much time on Twitter, must be Minnie’s fault.

I look forward to checking out your blog as well!
