It’s All About the Name

March 9, 2011

I’m a sucker for paint color names. Right now, I’m trying to decide whether to cover my office walls in “Scotland Road” or “Athenian Green.” Athenian Green evokes images of strong warrior goddesses, but there’s something romantic and dreamy about Scotland Road. The actual color of the paint will have very little to do with my final decision.

Life isn’t all that different from paint. Children who share a name that was popular during a certain year tend to blend into classrooms and societies well. Those of us who have unusual names also have the distinct pleasure of sticking out. “You don’t need to introduce yourself – I don’t know any other people named Harriette!” a client once told me.

Of course, copywriting has a lot to do with names. Press release titles, product taglines, ad campaign headings – it’s all about the name. I’m beginning to see that effective social networking has a lot to do with clever names too. What made you visit this blog from Twitter or Facebook? Was it the title or snippet that I placed in front of this link?

As I look around my apartment, I see that I am far more gone than I thought. My bathroom soap beckons to me with a quaint Italian scene and the name “Campagna.” Sweet and sudsy delights line my shower shelves – “Cake,” “Milk Chocolate,” and “Peppermint Breeze.” I’m truly a victim of marketing. Perhaps that’s why I love copywriting. I’m regularly in control of naming things.

Now, off to find the perfect white, or “Biscuit,” or “Cottage White,” or “Spice Delight…”

My bedroom is painted in “Notre Dame.” Like the cathedral, not the college. Not sure if that makes me a hunchback or not.
